Our nurses have a vital role in supporting the health and wellbeing of our community. Today, on International Nurses Day, we’re shining a spotlight on Jamie‑Lee and her commitment to providing compassionate, culturally safe care through her work at the Pamela Mam Health Centre.
Jamie‑Lee works closely with the Goodna community, delivering a wide range of nursing services including health education, women’s health, cancer screening, chronic disease management, and nurse triage for emergencies. Each day brings something different, but her focus is always on supporting people to feel safe, informed and respected in their care.
“Serving the Goodna community is incredibly meaningful,” Jamie‑Lee says. “Whether it’s women’s health, chronic disease management or emergency support, it’s about meeting people where they are and providing care that really listens to their needs.”
Her journey into nursing was shaped by a deeply personal experience. After having a sick child and feeling unheard and disrespected by some medical professionals, Jamie‑Lee knew she wanted to be part of change within the health system.
“I didn’t feel listened to or respected,” she explains. “That experience stayed with me and became a big part of why I wanted to become a nurse.”
With a strong passion for women’s health, Jamie‑Lee was also disheartened by the lack of trauma‑informed and culturally safe care available for Mob. This continues to drive her approach to nursing today.
“Everyone deserves care that is respectful, safe and understanding of their experiences,” she says. “For Mob especially, culturally safe and trauma‑informed care isn’t optional – it’s essential.”
Jamie‑Lee believes that trust and genuine connection are key to improving health outcomes and empowering people in their healthcare journeys.
For anyone considering a career in nursing, Jamie‑Lee offers honest and encouraging advice.
“If you have a passion for people, a genuine care for others, and a willingness to keep learning, nursing is an incredibly rewarding career,” she says. “Yes, there will be hard days – but knowing you’ve made a positive impact in your community makes it all worth it.”
